Karkat has a lot of Complicated Feelings That Will Likely Never Actually Be Voiced. Considering the relationships (I use that term lightly) he's had in the past, he's very much under the impression that he needs to remain focused on everyone else's lives before his own. He'll never actually admit that either, but the morals are there. Karkat doesn't have time for commitment, but he can dedicate an hour or two a day guiding the person in question in the right direction.

It's different with Terezi, though. It was different back in his world as well. He was always a little more fond of her than anyone else, and is used to being openly flirtatious with her without any actual title attached to it. In a way, he's doing exactly what he was hating everyone else for doing, in which he's drawing parallels from Redrezi to Terezi and trying to link the two as being similar individuals.

He's hit a bit of a wall, now that he's finding that she actually does care about him. Redrezi was too wrapped up in the fact that they were all doomed to die and be erased to actually reciprocate anything, so the attention he's since received from her is actually...really foreign to him. He's having an extremely hard time imagining that someone other than Kanaya (even Kanaya) was willing to face extinction for his sake, and its really punched him right in the Feelings.

He's afraid to admit that he might be flushed for Terezi for two reasons. One, it would mean commitment, and that's just not something Karkat Vantas does. Too many people need him for too many different things. The second reason is that he's since recognized that he's drawing too many similarities consciously between her and Redrezi, and that hypocrisy hits just a little too close to home.

Despite the broken trust, he still considers her someone he Cares About A Lot, and he's not about to let her out of his sight...even if he can't actually bring himself to be in the same room with her for more than an hour, right now.

Guilt is a powerful weapon.
