Similar things, but on a lesser scale. Specifically, Father was the Duke of Belkend, so he's in charge of the research labs there, as well as maintaining the city and surrounding area. Much of it is deciding which researchers to fund, from my understanding.

[Which is why it's so ironic that Spinoza had found a place to work there, and why it stuck in his throat; Duke Fabre had unknowingly given funding to one of his son's kidnappers.]

And of those... Probably the first, but I can't say that it isn't tempting to fade away from the political scene entirely.

How does one decide which researchers to fund? Do they petition you for funding where you live, or do you visit the city to take a look at their proposals before making decisions?

It sounds like being nobility can be pretty rough.

In most cases, the Duke lives in Belkend, so there's not much difference. Father only lives in Baticul because of Mother - she isn't able to travel any distance because of her health, so it was easier for the two of them to live in the manor than to live in Belkend and have to travel back and forth to attend court.

It's not harder than being any other kind of person. There's just more responsibility, and more eyes on you if you screw up. Any position of authority is like that, whether earned by birth or merit.

Oh, so if your mother's health had been better, would you have been raised in Belkend?

That's very true. You have a good head on your shoulders, you know.

It's very possible. It would have depended mostly on how much contact they wanted Natalia and I to have before the wedding.

Do most arranged marriages on your world have much contact between the bride and the groom before the ceremony?

Define "arranged." Almost everyone marries according to the Score, so in that sense, hardly anyone gets to choose.

It would be a few times a year, for most noble children - holidays, the ball at the King's birthday, things like that. Look nice, dance a few times that night, have tea the next day and then it's three months until the next visit.

What else did noble children have to do, aside from attend events like the King's birthday? Did you have any responsibilities growing up that a commoner your age wouldn't have had?

Studying, mostly. It's both hard work and a luxury - there are schools for common children, obviously, but it's far different from the private tutoring nobles receive. More practical, and most of them have to work alongside their parents during certain seasons, especially in the farming communities in Malkuth.

Did you ever have to do anything like that when you weren't with your family? Farming, harvesting, ect?

I have around a year and a half of private training under Van, and then I was thrust straight into the Oracle Knights. So, no.

What did Van's training entail? What were your duties within the Oracle Knights?

Martial training, for the most part. Some stealth, some tactical...

I was the head of Special Operations, which was effectively the Order's assassination division nine times out of ten.

So you killed people for a living? What did you do that one time out of ten when you didn't have assassinations do?

For a definition of it, I suppose.

And yet you don't have any issue with assassins. Sounds like a personal problem.

An assassin's victim won't have to bear the pain of death anymore once it's all over. A kidnapper's victim will have to live with it forever.

But unlike someone murdered, they have the chance to return to the people they love. They can continue to grow and move on, in whatever situation they find themselves in.

A person who is dead is dead, and no amount of crying over them will bring them back.

No amount of knowing a person's history can replace knowing the person themselves.
