[This.

Or rather, a usual day on the road with an elf and a ranger. You know, sleeping on forests, walking for miles on end, crossing mountains, killing orcs, bickering. The works.]

[You'll wake up in a very small room with glass doors and walls and windows, because privacy is not a thing Eleanor gets here. And then you'll eat your breakfast and maybe read a little before they bring in the needles and the ADAM, and there's mother lecturing you on this or that, and you'll listen carefully. Very. Carefully. After having a few needles uncomfortably put on your person, you'll then enjoy a nourishing meal and spend the afternoon reading at your leisure. Or well, that's what you'll make people think you're doing, when in truth you'll be far, far away from the body in the little glass box, riding along the mind of a little sister somewhere in Rapture: crawling through tunnels and avoiding splicers and gathering bits and pieces to try and recalibrate a Vita Chamber. It's arduous work. Then there'll be more needles and more pills and more plasmids and more ADAM, and as always, Mother talking and talking and never listening.

By the time you go to sleep, you'll be tired and worn and very, very bitter, but it's okay because tomorrow's a new day and you get to do it all over again.]

[An ordinary day for Yamato? Oh boy.

Wake up at five in the morning sharp - have a very bland breakfast that meets your dietary needs (set amount of carbohydrates, set amount of protein, etc, etc) - immediately afterwards your day is hours of studies and work and being lectured by experts in subjects such as quantum physics or astronomy or chemistry or biology or history or warfare or - anything, really.

You work and work and work until it's dinner time - another bland meal - then it's back to working and working until your head hurts and the exhaustion is so much that you just want to cry but crying is not allowed so you work and work -

and then it is eleven o'clock and you have to practice magic and summoning while your head is pounding and your stomach is cramping with hunger until you almost throw up from exertion. It is normally midnight by then, and then you have a small meal, a snack really, get ready for bed, and then sleep. You wake up at five o'clock and the cycle repeats]

[You're awake way before the sun rises, sleep something you don't do much anymore, but luckily your body has adapted. Breakfast is some dried meat from a storage in some decrepit old building, your groups base, and you immediately start working after eating. Work involves spending the first part of the day working on an old computer, something you enjoy doing, before you eventually get called out to help in a fight; some of the mutants from the wastelands are forcing their way into the city and are attacking innocents and trying to steal provisions.

You systematically cut down the invaders with your electricity, using your knife to cut and tear when they get too close, bullets are too precious to waste here, and it isn't long until they're a pile of mutilated corpses at your feet. But you simply brush the blood off and go help to treat the injured. You are injured too, but you brush off any attempts to be treated on and instead just work through the pain as you turn your attention to helping rebuild one of the many ruined buildings once everyone has been treated.

This stops by around midnight, when you'll have been dragged away from work by your two second-in-commands, who insist you eat and get some sleep. You don't sleep though, and instead take brief naps between the nightmares, but you make sure to have enough energy for tomorrow. You're tired, and sore, but when morning comes you have to keep working and fighting through it. You're not allowed to stop yet.]

[You wake up early, when the sky is still dark and the temperature is almost pleasantly warm. You go about getting washed and dressed, and then you go rummage through the stores at the bottom of the tower for some food. Because you do live in a tower! And as you look around this and that, the sun rises and everything starts heating up real hard. You have an hour or two before your... neighbors start making their rounds, so you go back to the top of the tower. Keep an eye on the window and your giant moth of a mom fluttering about and go about cleaning a couple dozen rifles. Check you've got enough ammo stacked at hand. And above all, don't panic.

Yeah, there are hordes of undead, shuffling corpses outside, moaning and groaning and wanting very much to make a slurpee with the contents of your brain and then possibly tear your limbs off and eat the still twitching flesh of your bones, but it's okay. Don't panic.

Shoot them from above, careful to aim precisely and not waste any of that precious ammo you've got. You're not going to get more for at least another week or two. Thin the heard of zombies a little until the day reaches its true suffocating horror and you start wondering if the sand outside is gonna randomly turn into glass. By then you're hungry again and the zombies have retreated. So it's time to grab a few rifles, make your way downstairs and outside and then go out to forage for some food with mom.

Mom is awesome, okay. Giant, horned moth she is, she's the epitome of cool and sometimes she lets you ride on her head and okay, that's cool. So you go and find some lunch in the usual spots: maybe some gourds to appease your moirail's vegetarian nagging. Though if you can get away with it, you'll take lizards and snakes if you can get your hands on them. You're good at shooting random critters, so it's likely.

Then it's just another round around the hive, just to make sure there's no little pack of zombies waiting to ambush you, and then you can go home. Read a bit. Surf the web. Maybe watch a movie or two. You've got a goddamn impressive collection, really, from every genre and every time period and you know the five line long titles by heart. You have a little crush on troll Sean Connery and troll Alfred Hitchcock is your hero.

By the time the sun starts setting, you're getting tired and sleepy, but you can't go just yet. You sign on and wait for your friends to wake up, but most importantly, you wait for your moirail to log in. You talk about your day and she talks about her dreams, and maybe someone else will message you. (They never message you because they don't really know you all that well and you're too shy to message anyone first, but you still stare at the usernames your moirail's passed along, quietly impressed by the variety of them. Must be nice, you think, to talk with so many people.) She wants you to go visit her so you can see her new gardening project and you promise you'll go at the end of the month. She chats with you about nothing in particular but for you it's priceless, your only real source of actual interaction with another sentient being. It kinda sucks to be essentially the only diurnal member of a traditionally nocturnal race. But you just can't help it.

Close to midnight, when you start typing random things that make no sense, she gently orders you to bed and your mom seems to second the idea. So you bid her good night and check one last time for any stray message that you might have accidentally ignored. There's none, as usual. So you go back to sleep, a few hours of poor sleep and bad dreams and those Voices somewhere at the edge of your consciousness. Maybe you need to change the sopor.

Or maybe you're so lonely you're going insane.]

[You feel regret, shame, and you and don't dare touch anything because of it. You simply watch as humanity collapses under it's own weight, doled out in dizzying cycles of arrogance and fear.

There is no consistency, only chaos; this is humanity you're keeping vigil over, after all. But your feelings persist, despite small glimpses of hope, and mankind helping one another.

Really, it's mostly loneliness that's left by then. And you never get to rest.]

[Just doing nothing but watching is what drove her mad the first time, when her soul had wrung itself inside out and twisted into the notes of a song.

For a dizzying moment that she's unsure has actually ended, the future and the past and the now blur into a circle - comprehending all of akasha isn't something that the human brain was ever supposed to even attempt, and it largely slips over and past her, like a tidal wave overtaking the shoreline.

There's a word she doesn't know very well, that persists as the real definition of that experience. It slips into her mind at first incomprehensibly, going through several alien forms that feel a little like words but implicitly aren't, something on a different level - and then takes a more recognizable form as 'anguish.']

Before becoming a Puella Magi...

Sayaka, Madoka, and Hitomi take the same path they always do to school, and chatter about lighthearted things - Madoka's choice in ribbons, Hitomi's increasing deluge of love letters, stuff like that. She finds class as boring as it usually is - when she first gets there, it's okay, but as the lesson drags on Sayaka drifts off. It's really easy to zone out in your own class in favor of watching what people are doing in another room over - the fact that all the classrooms have windows instead of proper walls makes that possible.

The city Sayaka lives in has, in general, very visually striking architecture, though Sayaka takes the sights for granted. After school, the trio head off to a cafe-type thing, and then split apart when Hitomi leaves to maintain her demanding schedule of fancy lessons and stuff. Tea ceremony even. Sometimes she'll go CD hunting around now, but today she doesn't have enough yen on hand - so Sayaka says goodbye as well, then heads to the hospital to visit Kyousuke.

She tries her best to make the visit a pleasant thing, but isn't sure if she succeeds...

Afterwards, she goes home, not really in the mood to do anything else.

After becoming a Puella Magi...

If she had trouble staying engaged with the teacher's lecture before, now it's fifty times worse. She's been staying out later - Sayaka's natural drowsiness in class is magnified, and when she's not dozing, she's thinking about what people she could save, if she wasn't sitting in this classroom while the day marched by. Tracking Witches took a long time and a lot of effort, and you could bet her time would be better spent doing that than learning about.. what was it today, math? Sayaka honestly didn't know, until she looked up at the board for confirmation.

After school ended for the day, Sayaka gained a determined spring in her step, and left alone.

Her soul gem is clutched in her hand and glowing blue, with the occasional tell-tale flux that means there might be a Witch near. Kyuubey dogs her heels, but she doesn't mind having him there. Doing this would be worse if she was entirely alone.

She doesn't find anything that day, or even into the first few hours of night. But right when she's ready to turn in, a Familiar just flicks by, out of the corner of her vision. It isn't long until it's dead and she's got no Grief Seed for her trouble, but that's okay. Mitakihara's just that much safer now.

You wake up in the morning in your small room, with white sheets and no decorations. You can feel the floor moving under your feet, but that's okay. You're used to it and your body automatically corrects for it. You check your arms - you got a minor injury in your last mission, but the nanobots in your body have healed it already.

You ignore the laughing in your head that sounds like your own but not.

Breakfast is some sort of unidentifiable nutrition, formulated to keep you healthy and able to perform at top efficiency. You take a walkway through the ship to the exercise room, stopping to stare at the stars outside for a moment and gaze in the direction of Lagrange Point 4, where you feel a stab of anger towards the people who made you what you are.

You continue, and work out on the small treadmill and lift weights until it's time to eat lunch, which is the same thing as breakfast.

In the afternoon, you and the other Gundam Meisters are given a mission, and you all strap yourself into your mobile suits before taking off. You're at home in front of the controls, trusting Kyrios to move at your command like you would trust your own body.

The mission involves killing other pilots. You hate it, but you know it has to be done to eliminate those who would promote war. You always have a nanosecond of hesitation before you pull the trigger - long enough to be explained by informational lag - and in that moment you hear the other you in your head taunt you, tell you to do it or he'll take over your body and do it for you.

The other pilots neatly dispatched, you return to the ship and eat dinner, which is the same as breakfast and lunch. Before you fall asleep, the other you appears in your room, complaining again about your hesitation. You do your best to ignore him, and fall asleep. Hopefully your sleep is dreamless, and not full of nightmares again.

DAY
> You wake up in the morning after a good night's sleep. As you get yourself ready for the day, you can hear the voices muttering in the back of your mind. It's normal for you hear them by now.

> The daily routine is routine. Wake up, get ready, greet your dormmates and attend school.

> Sometimes, the teacher may ask you a question. Whenever you answer correctly, you can feel the admiration of your classmates. Other times, you may feel tired enough to sleep through the lecture. If you choose to sleep, you'll feel Great afterwards. But if you choose to stay awake, you might learn something new.

> After school is when you're the most busiest and popular. Attending one of your clubs, the student council's meetings or hanging out with friends, you'll always have something occupying your attention.

> Every time you meet with someone in the afternoon, the voices will speak up. They will tell you that your Social Link with your companion have grown stronger. Any newly fused Persona of the matching arcana will receive a boost.

EVENING
> In the evening, your time is more free. Far fewer people seeks your company at this time of the day, so you can choose to hang out at the mall, study in your room or turn in early for the night.

> If they are available, you may choose to talk to the strange monk in the club or the greedy businessman in the mall.

> You may also choose to, instead, forego all of those and prepare yourself to train and explore Tartarus during the Dark Hour.

TARTARUS
> You are the leader.

> After picking three people to make up your party, your chosen group starts exploring the floors.

> Every time you enter into battle with Shadows, you start barking orders. You tell your team what to do in this battle: act freely, support the team or strike the enemies hard. Sometimes, you may be forced to tell them the exact move to use on the Shadows. Otherwise, you trust in your team's judgement.

> During the battle, your mind is clear and quiet. The voices know when to stay silent, until you call upon the powers of your various Personas in battle.

> The familiar tip of your evoker touch your head and the lack of hesitation to pull trigger. After all, you're used to this method of summoning already.

[>At first you thought it was people talking around you, rather than from inside your head... but the voices had the same timbre as when Kyuubey would 'pass messages.' Not from any direction, but instead, bouncing around on the inside of your skull.

>It's normal, and you guess it makes your morning routine a little less boring... but it's also distracting. There's so many.

>You walk with familiarity through a city some part of you doesn't know at all.

>That unnerved and out-of-place part settles down when you and Kenji go to Hagakure like usual - it's similar enough to after-school hours spent with two girls in a cafe to fit in analogously, even if it's not quite the same.

>When you slip on the red armband of SEES, there's a brief moment of "Oh, now this makes more sense," though you can't place what that realization actually is.

>As the Dark Hour begins and you start another climb through Tartarus, it's like putting on a well-fitting glove. This is right. Maybe Junpei's rubbing off on you some, but - this is like saving the world, one night at a time. That idea is one you find very agreeable.

Zelda [OU] | Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time | HOLY TL;DR BATMAN

[personal profile] sageprincess 2012-10-07 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[You awake before dawn, in a pile of hay, to the smell of livestock and an auburn-headed girl telling you you have to leave, he'll be awake soon. You quietly thank her for her kindness, as always, and she manages to sneak you a small bottle of milk before you go. It's not much, and it's risky, and you can only hope the five rupees you left in the hay will be enough to cover it without arising the corrupted ranch owner's suspicion as you climb over the outer wall.

You don't have much time to worry, however, as before dawn means the Stalchildren are still roaming the field, and you have to race to the safety of the nearest tree before they can swipe at you. You've learned to not bother fighting them, as with each one that falls, another rises to take its place without end. They clamber at your tree, their skeletal forms rattling as they try to get at you, but thankfully they cannot climb. And so you wait for the sun to rise.

When it does, you are free to leap down from the relative safety of your perch as the Stalchildren burn and fall to pieces all at once in its light. But it's still not safe, though the immediate threat might be gone. It's never completely safe, so long as that ominous tower looms in the distance where something precious to you used to be. But it's easier to hide where there's plenty to be distracted by, and so you make your way to town.

Kakariko is the one place that seems to have grown since your flight nearly seven years ago, though out of necessity. The refugees of old Castle Town try to deal with being uprooted, and the old residents of Kakariko try to accommodate the burgeoning population. You pass two men who appear to have nothing better to do than laugh and tease one another all day, a dancing couple oblivious to the world around them, guards singing praises to "the great Impa" who opened this town to the public.

You wonder how she's doing. You wish you could see her, but the risk is too great.

In hushed tones and whispers from the shadows, you hear talk of the Princess Zelda's fate. You hear that she's dead, that she's left Hyrule and is never coming back, that she's amassing an army to take back her country, and you pass without comment.

You watch over the town from the rooftops (people rarely look up, you've found) until about mid-afternoon when the Evil King's men decide to pay the town a visit and you decide your welcome has suddenly run out. Quietly, you jump from roof to roof, always just managing to stay out of the soldier's vision until you make it to the town entrance, when you make a mad dash for the field. Your mind races alongside your body, as you search to fulfill that ever-present need: shelter. You can't ask to stay at the ranch two nights in a row, and you won't be able to reach the forest by nightfall, much less the lake. Which leaves one option.

Despite every fiber of your being telling you to turn the other way, you sprint towards that ominous tower. The drawbridge leading into the dilapidated town is broken and rotting, but easy enough to jump over. That is the only simple part of your journey, however. Death and evil hang over the abandoned buildings like smog, but you dare not run. You dare not make a sound as you creep through the remains of Castle Town, because the crumpled and moaning forms of dried out corpses watch your every step, waiting for you to come within reach...

(You remember the first time you made this trip - the first time one of those things screamed and you swore you would never let that paralyzing fear grab you again.)

Safety (or some form of it) is just within your reach, though, as the Temple of Time grows larger in your vision. And as you make it inside, as you step into the vast, silent stone sanctuary, a sense of solemn peace washes over you, relaxing you. Every step feels more heavy than the last, but you push forward until you reach the back chamber where an empty pedestal stands. Slowly, you take a seat on the stone dais, resting, catching your breath.

And you tell yourself it won't always be like this. You won't have to run much longer now. Hyrule's Hero will return soon, and when he does, you'll need to help him.

So you wait, and do as you have done for the past seven years.]

Jade Strider | Homestuck [AU: RDV/V]

[personal profile] reddeadvirtuoso 2012-10-07 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Your name is JADE STRIDER. Or at least, you seem to be some kind of weird spiritual passenger that is living her life, though may or my not actually have her name at the moment.

Screw it, I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR NAME IS. But regardless of what kind of moniker you currently go by, you are now living the life of JADE STRIDER.

Contrary to what you may have been led to believe, you are not a Knight, a thousand year old immortal, or SOMETHING ELSE REALLY STUPID.

You live in the state of TEXAS, USA, in an apartment in a fairly populated city with your BRO. On a normal day, you are expected to go to SCHOOL, and suffer the torment of most of the other kids picking on you. You don't actually have many friends at school (which is to say, you have absolutely ZERO), and most of the teachers don't remember you exist. It's OK, because they're all just PEASANTS who don't understand how TOTALLY COOL you are. Besides, you have some AWESOME friends that you talk to online. It just kind of sucks that they all live in totally different states (or different land masses, in John's case.)

After getting home from school, you have HOMEWORK to do, but you almost NEVER do it. Doing homework is for total nerds after all, and definitely not for COOL KIDS like you. So instead of doing your homework, you spend all day in your room, talking to your friends JOHN, DAVE, and your BEST FRIEND ROSE on the computer. You and Rose talk a lot about books and video games, and Rose shares her hilarious bias for Chose Your Own Adventure Books.

It's fair to say you're KIND OF A SHUT-IN. This is probably why a lot of the kids at school make fun of you, in addition to your VARIETY OF STRANGE AND NERDY INTERESTS. That's OK though, it only bothers you because you can't go see your REAL FRIENDS.

Besides your computer, your room also features your BED, your ELECTRIC GUITAR (which you are fucking awesome at playing), and a variety of POSTERS and PHOTOGRAPHS hanging on the walls, along with an OLD HUNTING RIFLE. If you're not fucking around on the internet, you like to PLAY GUITAR, TAKE PICTURES, or STARE OUT THE WINDOW. It doesn't offer very much of a view though.

The only other person that inhabits your apartment, as previously stated, is your BRO. But you don't actually SEE him that much, because he is basically a GRADE-A NINJA, one that you hope to be some day! However, there is always a healthy stash of FROZEN FOOD, CHEAP AMMO, and SMUPPETS in the kitchen. Every now and then you'll meet your Bro on the roof of your apartment for a strife. You ALWAYS LOSE, because he is just that goddamn impressive. Sometimes, when your Bro isn't working, he'll take you to the TACO SHOP down the street, which serves the best imitation Mexican food your city has to offer. This is one of the few times you actually deign to leave the house, aside from school.

You almost always stay up until ASS O'CLOCK in the middle of the night, which is always way too late since you always have SCHOOL in the morning. This is because NO ONE ON THE INTERNET SLEEPS, and because your friends live in vastly different time zones. You often venture to the kitchen in the middle of the night for a frozen burrito or waffle or two. Frozen pizzas are usually reserved for Fridays.

[You wake up early, the last rays of light barely dying in the distance. There's whirring and clicking about your feet, tiny mechanical things scurrying about. As you go about dressing yourself and then making your way to the food preparation block, two things become obvious: there's a lot of tiny, mechanical things scurrying about, and for all the place is grandiose and kind of maybe luxurious, it seems to be abandoned. You make yourself some tea, then some black sludge with enough caffeine to power engines, then some tiny bit of food. Then you head into the workshop.

The workshop is an OCD nightmare of spare parts and bent metal and tools. There's tools everywhere, neatly put in rows or lines or racks, because you can't go to sleep before tidying up. On your workbench, one of the whirring, clicking pieces of machinery is twitching and patiently waiting for you to finish what you started yesterday. There's a snag in the mechanisms inside the serpentine structure - which, after sweeps upon sweeps, upon sweeps of working and reworking and fine tuning and upgrading, looks rather disturbingly life and snakelike - so you gently set out to work at fixing it.

You spend half of the night fixing the little guy, which slithers away with a whir and a hiss once you're done. By then you've finished your coffee and you're a little hungry so you head back to eat some more of your reserves. And now... well, maybe taking a stroll outside? Or maybe shoot a rockwall. That always makes you feel much better. You'll have to go scavenger for this or that soon, but hey, you'll welcome the distraction. By now you're pretty used to getting what you need, awkward as it might be. It's just routine.

Just.

Routine.

Every night. From what feels like the beginning of Time, god. And when the night is over you retire back to your place, side stepping little whirring trinkets here and there and convince yourself you're not wondering where the hell Mindfang is, or when she'll be dragging her sorry ass back here, missing a limb or two for you to replace.

It's not like you worry about the stupid gamblinant.

Of course not.]

Lancer | Fate/Prototype

[personal profile] puppy_lancer 2012-10-07 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
His name was Cu Chulainn. At one point he had been a great hero, running amok and living his life to the fullest, running around each day causing maximum havoc. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. But that was a long time ago, and he eventually died. Though his life had been filled with tragedies, he still considered it a good life, and for all intents and purposes, he was content.

But the world wasn't quite done with him. After death, he was stored away in a place called the Throne of Heroes, waiting for a day when he would once again be needed. Many centuries later, he would be be summoned as a Servant, a specialized familiar, in a ceremony called the Holy Grail War. He was pulled out of the Throne and more or less crammed through a mold called "Lancer", that spat him out in a body made completely of magical energy.

The girl who had summoned him was called Misaya Reiroukan. Her cold, elegant, harsh, and sadistic behavior reminded Lancer of his teacher, Scathach. At sixteen years of age, she was already a talented magus and had the potential to be the greatest magus of her generation. But she was cursed by her own father to die unless she took the Holy Grail. When the command seals appeared on her body, the curse also activated and started eating away at her. It reminded him even more of Scathach, a woman who forced to live a cursed existence due to her own power.

And so we look at the everyday life of Servant Lancer. In life, he never had much of a need for sleep, and it held true in his second existence as well. Nights are spent watching over his Master and caring for her dog familiars. When morning comes, he goes downstairs, makes breakfast, and either calls his Master up or waits for her to rouse herself, depending on how tiring the previous night had been. Of course, there might be the question of why she doesn't make her own meals. Firstly--a magus of her stature surely cannot be expected to do something so common and vulgar, especially not when there is an obedient dog ready to wait on her every whim. Secondly--the curse has already started to eat into her limbs, leaving her weaker and weaker every day. A person who can barely walk a certain distance can't be expected to do something as tiring as making breakfast. So Lancer makes it for her and watches as she eats. Rarely is he offered anything, even as a courtesy, because as a Servant he doesn't need to eat, and as a dog, he'll have to beg for his table scraps.

Usually, Misaya would have school, but she's been skipping more and more after her curse activated. Again, it's simply too taxing for her, even if she won't admit it. Lancer's routine would vary a bit here. Sometimes, he goes out and goes shopping, either for their next meal or for his own beer. Occasionally, if she's at school or otherwise occupied, he's allowed to go on break he ends up fishing at the pier or just strolling around town, chatting up pretty girls. He'd like to date them too, but he needs to get home and care for Misaya. Or sometimes, he'd end up at the local Irish pub, getting a few drinks, if he's really stressed out.

The best days are when Misaya has energy, but doesn't want to go to school. Then he takes her out around the town. Needless to say, she jeers at almost everything that he does, but he knows she enjoys it. Once he even tries to sneak her into the pub. In the end, it gets both of them thrown out and almost arrested. At times they run into the other Servants and Masters, but it almost never breaks into a full-out fight.

Come sundown, the fun and games are over. The Holy Grail War truly kicks into gear. This is where he seeks out other Servants and Masters and gathers information on them, or fights them, or even sneak into their houses and try to kill them. He wishes they could fight openly, or that his Noble Phantasm wasn't sealed away. It's fun figuring out creative ways to fight against other Servants, and sometimes he gets lost in the excitement. But time is running out for Misaya and he just wants to get the Grail as fast as possible.

The fighting continues for much of the night, but at a certain point, it ends, sometimes with nobody having gained an advantage. And that's when Misaya sleeps, sometimes peacefully, sometimes fitfully. Lancer, of course, watches over her until morning, when the routine repeats again. Sometimes he mulls over battles and new things he has learned about the other Servants and Masters. Other times, he promises himself that he will find a way to kill the other Servants the next time they meet. Whatever happens, he promises he won't fail. He can't fail. He'll save her, and she'll be able to grow up and live a long and happy life. After all, she wasn't a hero--she wouldn't die an unreasonable death.

Spoilers: He failed. Her death was painful and unreasonable.

[ ... This is kind of a weird experience.

It's like something completely alien to Minato--being in Strega, he never went to school once in his life.

Having never experienced ANYTHING remotely normal, when you take out the TV world (that's most familiar to him, really, it's like the Dark Hour), that just leaves him a little confused and fumbling for something to compare it to, but he has nothing. ]

[ It starts quietly enough. Wake up to the sound of a small, blue rooster in your camp bright and early out in the great fields of Hyrule. There's life all around you, faint music in the air. It's a gorgeous day, the long rolling fields greet your eyes and your makeshift little camp nearby shows sign of a fire and last night's meal. There's still quite a bit of a foreboding feeling when you look to the north--a large darkened patch of sky, a thunderstorm... but you don't focus on that.

You clean up, making sure you don't leave anything damaging behind. You were already dressed, of course! No bathing scenes this time.

You have a destiny. A mission. Something you've got to do for the good of everyone. You check on your horse, Epona, and she greets you happily. You feed her a few carrots, you always keep some around.

Once everything is ready to go, you mount your horse and begin a vast ride which doesn't stop until it's nearly nightfall, passing by canyons and over hills and you encounter large ghosts on the way that you defeat with your arrows while on horseback, archery nearly unmatched.

When you finally reach the valley, the sun is setting. You cross a bridge on Epona, a giant waterfall looms under it. The glowing orange sun seems to highlight the tingle of more music, from the spirits itself. Finally you arrive at your destination, a large fortress inhabited solely by female pirates.

But instead of being even mildly worried, you ride right up, and they greet you as a friend! You mention you're going to go through the wastelands that head out in the other direction and they let you stay for the night. They respect you; it's quite obvious you're one of them, you even have the membership to prove it.

You spend the rest of the day in a fierce archery competition. It comes close, but you beat the high score on horseback, grinning. They're astounded. But you're not. You put your soul into that bow.

Then it's time to bed up for the night--a nice night, too. Talking together with the people you're surrounded by, who, although normally branded thieves and pirates and terrifying, are really anything but. You're cheerful and at ease around them. Soon you'll go into the temple to find out what happened to their leader, Nabooru.

You make sure Epona is taken care of. She's brushed and fed well. You talk to her for a little while, thanking her for her hard work, telling her how important her role is in all this, too. You don't regret becoming friends with her at all.

By the time you finally fall asleep, it's a pretty sound sleep. But all you're thinking about is getting up early in the morning to cross the wasteland nearby, where a huge sandstorm and ghosts are rumored to live... but you're not afraid of any of it. You face it with nothing less than complete confidence and courage. Because failure is not an option to you. It weighs heavily on your mind, though, and there is always the niggling doubt of "what if I do not succeed?", but you push that away.

For Hyrule's sake, you MUST succeed. ]

[You wake up in what you can only presume is the morning. The skies in the World That Never Was area always dark, so it's difficult to tell. One assumes you get food and water in there somewhere, though canon is sparse on these sorts of details. Except for the fact that you pretty much sleep in your clothes, so changing is not a big issue.

You make your way to the Grey Area, where you can sort of relax, and perhaps talk to some of the other Organization members. You usually only talk to Roxas and Axel that much. This lasts up until Saix gives you your mission for the day, along with a lecture if he feels your performance has been sub-standard of late.

Your missions primarily consist of heart collection or recon, especially the former. You travel through the dark corridors to different worlds, destroying Heartless with your Keyblade while you're there. It's your most important job, and everyone makes sure you remember. Sometimes you end up working with some of the other Organization members, sometimes you're alone. If you're lucky, you end up working with Axel or Roxas, and things are a little bit more fun.

You spend most of your day on your mission. You keep to the shadows, take out your quota of heartless or gather the necessary information, and then you RTC - Return To Castle. On good days though, when nothing bad is happening, instead of going straight back, you go to Twilight Town, get yourself a sea-salt ice cream, and go to the top of the clock tower, where, with a bit of luck, Roxas and Axel will be waiting there - or else they'll arrive in a bit.

On these good days, you laugh and joke and talk about all kinds of silly things. If something happened that you don't understand, you might ask Roxas or especially Axel about it.

Eventually it's getting late, and you go back home. You head for your room and get ready for the next day, thinking a little bit about sbout the things that happened that day, your friends and yourself. And that routine, that is your life right there. It's not a lot, but it's not like a couple of Nobodies and their replica friend have that much anyway.

Unless something goes wrong, which it often does.]

[It's been quite a while since his days had anything like a truly set routine, since he last woke up at the same place more than twice in row (that is not counting the short amount of time he was kind of out of the game after a particular nasty altercation with some Heartless in the Cave of Wonders).

But that's okay. He has accepted this, like he has accepted the fact that that piece of Darkness that is not his own, that is Ansem's, is ever steadily growing, is taking root inside his Heart, slowly, surely growing stronger and leaking into his being.

He can only look into one thing at a time and if he has to decide between waking Sora and getting rid of that Darkness, then the choice is obvious.

There are some days spent with Xion, while she is on the run from the Organization, hidden away in the last place anyone will ever expect him to return to, in the wrapped stench of Maleficent's castle in Hollow Bastion.

There are some days spent tracking, after Roxas, after Xion, after any trace left behind by the members of the Organization, any information that will come handy later on. When they are ready to take them down, one by one.

There are some days spent running, with Axel or Xigbar or any of them one step behind, and sometimes he lets them get close on purpose, more and more recently - in worlds that are far, far away from the ones where those he means to protect are hidden.

There are some days spent in Twilight Town, where he rests in the safety of the mansion, sometimes reading whatever DiZ has shuffled into his possessions this time, whatever clue the older man presents him to the ever evolving puzzle of his motivations and of the makings of the worlds, sometimes talking quietly with Naminé in the White Room - whispered conversations to the only (awake) person he would dare calling a friend in this house (but never does).

And sometimes he just sleeps, leaning back against milky, white glass, as he breaths the scent of Sora's light around him and ignores the silent tears (he had never thought it possible to miss him, her, them, so terribly that it would feel as if the loneliness tears his being apart), because this is the closest he can get right now to the bestest friend he's known since childhood days, the closest he will ever be again, because the taint inside him is only growing stronger with every passing day, and just as it grows stronger, Riku grows more certain.

He won't be able to keep his promise.

He won't be there to scold Sora once he awakens again.

He won't return to the Islands he calls home once it's all over.

But he does what needs to be done, not for himself, not for his friend, but for the sake of everyone. If this is his sacrifice then so be it.

And so Riku spends his every day different and yet the same: in that utter awareness, with cold purpose and certainty and the loneliness in his heart locked away into the deepest abyss (at least most of the time), because that is what it means to know necessity and to act in its name.

He has told Xion to do what's the best for everyone, and he intends to follow that advice himself. No matter what it might cost him.]
