[Oh... It's okay? Gaara extends his arm again, and this time, grasps an ear between his fingers. He pulls on the ear, and a smile breaks out over his face.]

Big brother... you're not afraid? [He keeps playing with his ear, tugging on it this way and that.] Only Father and Yashamaru touch me.

Where's Temari? [He looks around.] She has funny hair.

[Tug too hard and that hood's coming off, kid.]

Afraid? Nah, not anymore. [He drops a broad wink to Gaara.] I'll tell you this -- you're gonna grow up to be a really cool guy.

And let's make that number three, hm? [It's a bit daring of him, with Gaara this young, but he reaches out a hand and gives that red hair a light ruffle. Better believe he's ready to pull back at any moment -- after all, he's a puppeteer, if the Sand goes for his hands, he's done for -- but he's being very pointed not to broadcast any nervousness about it.]

Huh...? [He stops pulling for a minute.] You don't know that... I'm not big yet.

[Gaara's turquoise eyes widen with clear surprise. He rarely gets touched that the action stuns him momentarily. His sand doesn't react because the contact doesn't register as a threat. Once he gets over the shock, he smiles again, and suddenly tugs hard on his brother's hood. With a cute, quiet laugh, he turns away and runs off, carrying the hood in his secure little hands.]

But I kn-

[... And there's Gaara running off with his hood. Sigh.]

Oi, oi! Come back here with that, you!

[He follows after Gaara, and spins out a thread -- not to grab the boy, because he's aware that things can quickly turn into Very Bad Ideas when Gaara is this young -- but instead to get a secure hold on the hood, which suddenly twists in Gaara's hands under the touch of his chakra thread.]

Huh?

[The hood starts moving on its own! The boy is so surprised that he trips and falls, activating his sand. It cradles around his body, shielding him from outright hitting the floor.

Seeming unfazed, Gaara stares up at his brother from his seated spot.] How’d you do that? [He obviously has no idea what his siblings specialize in, just that they’re training to become ninja too.]

[Kankuro grins and wiggles his fingers.]

I'm a puppeteer, little brother. Jounin of the Playhouse and all that good stuff.

[It's not that much of a surprise that Gaara doesn't know; if he's too young to remember Yashamaru's death, then his Kankuro can't be more than eight or so. He didn't start learning the threads until about that age, although he'd been mad about the puppets long before.]
