I would say that the first step is understanding it is a hard process so that you won't get discouraged. Then, listen--really listen--to what your friends tell you. Do they thank you because you always make them smile? Do you bake their favorite cookies? Do you just know when to be there?

Finally, be honest with yourself. Don't let the negativity that so fills this place hide the truth from you. That, perhaps, is the hardest part because no matter how honest we are to other people, it can be very hard to be just as honest with ourselves...
